As a student in Philadelphia he wrote his thesis on Kenny Dorham, evolving into his debut as a leader: ‘Tribute To KD’. His second release features his own compositions. Challenging and demanding for all players, ‘Night Life’ is a worthy follow-up to Gidon’s critically acclaimed debut.

“Night Life is cut out of a luxurious, royal-blue bolt of velvet. It sparkles with jewels, and it sparkles in tingling and tinkling tones. Some of its sparkles are more precious than precious stones; others are just splashes of costume jewellery”
“Night Life was New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Paris, Berlin; Uptown, downtown; Harlem, out South; anywhere where they wore that gorgeous velvet mantel”
It was these words by Duke Ellington that inspired Gidon Nunes Vaz. For Gidon, music’s atmosphere is inseparably connected with night life and living in a metropolis. “Whenever I went to a gig at night, the atmosphere always connected to the music I was about to play. The best musical moments were always at night in small clubs.”

A standard-bearer for a new generation of jazz trumpeters in Holland and a band leader of exquisite taste, Gidon is a wonderful example of the great times we live in.
